It's not easy. When you delete a file from a standard desktop computer, the file first gets moved to the "recycle bin" or the "trash," which means only that you've placed the intact data in a new directory. You erase the file when you empty your recycle bin. But even then, much of the information remains on the hard disk. Exactly how much depends on the type of computer you're using and which operating system you have. Here's how it works: The information in each file you create gets stored on your computer's hard disk, where it's spread across multiple "data clusters," or chunks of space that each have a particular address. The computer keeps track of where to look for each file; pieces of a single document, for example, might be stored in clusters all over the disk. If possible, a computer will store files in contiguous clusters, so all the information is kept close together. There's gold... well steel, aluminum and copper in recycled electronics There's gold... well steel, Noranda operates recycling facility here HEATHER ENNIS, Staff writer Most people don't think of Brampton as a mining town, but they might be surprised. Since 2003, a local facility has been quietly churning out thousands of tonnes of steel, aluminum and copper and they find it underground. The plant's operator, Noranda Recycling, calls the Brampton facility an above-ground mine. It is one of three North American facilities that chew up electronic products that are past their best-before dates and spits out valuable and re-useable metals. "The metals we produce end up being used in products, and when those products reach the end of life, those resources are still encapsulated within," said Cindy Thomas, plant manager of the Brampton electronics recycling facility located near Hwy. 410 and Steeles Avenue. "Metals are unique in that you can use them over and over again." Approximately 15 per cent of the metals fed through smelters run by mining giant Noranda-Falconbridge come not from the ground, but from recycling. The 82,000 square-foot Brampton plant can process 1.4 million kilograms of electronics-- including computers, photocopiers, printers, cell phones, VCRs and telephones-- every month. Each piece is painstakingly dismantled by hand to remove toxic components, shredded, and separated into individual metal parts. None of the material that enters the Noranda facility ends up in a landfill, and even the plastic parts are used to fuel the recovery process. "Even our dust has enough metal that we send it to our smelters for recovery," said Thomas. Since the 1980s, increased use and dependence on electronic products in North America has created an unprecedented disposal problem, said Thomas. "The lifecycle of these products was on a rapid decline," she said. "There's a mountain of end-of-life products out there." At the same time, Noranda found itself with a multi-billion-dollar smelter sitting on top of an exhausted mine. To feed it, the company looked to recycling. Noranda recycling facilities in California, Tennessee and Brampton were built as part of a partnership with electronics manufacturer Hewlett-Packard. The company recycles all of its products through Noranda, and is approximately halfway to achieving its goal of recycling one billion pounds of electronics by 2007. Hewlett Packard also plans to design hazardous materials out of at least half of their products entirely by next year. According to the U.S. National Safety Council, only 11 per cent of computers in North America are recycled today. More than half of them end up developing countries around the world, where cheap labour and lax safety laws mean toxic products are handled by poor and unprotected workers and usually end up littering the countryside and polluting the water and soil, said Thomas, who has been to the overseas electronic dumping grounds. The rest of the computers end up in North American landfills. The average computer monitor contains nearly two kilograms of lead-- one of the components that have to be removed from the products before processing at the Brampton recycling facility-- and can leak into soil and groundwater. "Lead is one of those nasties that if it ends up in our landfills, it has the potential to leak into our drinking water," said Thomas. In Canada, more than 70,000 tonnes of end-of-life electronics are expected to be produced this year. According to Environment Canada statistics, disposed computers will contain 3,000 tonnes of lead, four-and-a-half tonnes of Cadmium and more than a tonne of mercury. The same report states a single gram of mercury can destroy a 20-acre lake for at least one year. Though numerous "electronics recyclers" have sprung up in recent years, very few of them actually handle the products in environmentally friendly way. In fact, said Thomas, most of them put the electronics on a ship bound for the developing world. Though 70 per cent of the electronics brought to Noranda come from manufacturers, individual consumers can bring old products to the Brampton facility. It costs 45 cents per pound of recycled materials, and the average computer weighs approximately 70 pounds. It's important to ask questions of recyclers, said Thomas, who suggested they should be able to provide evidence for the ultimate destination of all of the products they co
